Aphrodisiac Cooking {Valentines Series Part 1} The Home Hour: Episode 106
It’s February and we’re celebrating Valentines Day all month long with a special three-part Valentine’s series all about, love, sex, relationships and trying to understand what men want anyway? On today’s episode we’re taking the bedroom into the kitchen with a chat about Aphrodisiac Cooking. Kirsten and Graham are joined by author and aphrodisiac food expert, Amy Reiley to discuss how we can heat up our cooking and our love lives! This episode is full of practical ways to include libido-enhancing foods in your meal planning and a historical explanation of how certain foods came to be thought of as aphrodisiacs. Amy Reiley is the author of several books including Fork Me, Spoon Me, Romancing the Stove, and Eat Cake Naked. Recipes we mentioned on this show: Chocolate Smothered Brie from Fork Me, Spoon Me: the sensual cookbook by Amy Reiley * 2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced   * 1 1/2 t butter   * 1 1/2 c dark chocolate chips   * 1/2 c heavy cream   * 6 oz wedge of ripe brie   * 1 pint strawberries, washed with stems on   * 1/2 French baguette   Put garlic on a baking tray and sprinkle chunks of butter on top. Toast under the broiler until just brown. (Adult supervision recommended.) Remove from broiler and toss the hard, golden chips in the melted butter and set aside to rest.   Arrange the brie and strawberries on a serving platter.   In a double boiler or a metal mixing bowl fitted onto a small pot of simmering water, gently melt the chocolate chips with the cream over low heat, stirring steadily with a gentle motion. (Note: You can melt chocolate in the microwave, but it burns very easily this way. Only try this method if you feel sure of your technique.)   When chocolate reaches a smooth, creamy texture, remove from heat and fold in the hard garlic chips.  Smother the cheese with the hot chocolate and allow the sweet topping to drench a few berries.  Serve immediately with a hunk of French bread and a total lack of inhibition. We also tried a delicious holiday drink created by Hannah herself! “Blitzen Sour” (A Christmas-y version of a Whiskey Sour) 1.5 oz bourbon .75 oz rosemary syrup (I’ll give you instructions on this!) .75 oz strained lemon juice .5 oz ginger liqueur (Domaine de Canton or King’s Ginger are both good!) (Add all of the above to a shaker 3/4 full of ice, shake for 20 seconds and strain into a glass) Garnish with a sprig of rosemary and a few cranberries To make the rosemary syrup: Bring one cup of water to a boil and gradually stir in one cup of sugar, reduce to a slow simmer. Add one package of fresh rosemary sprigs (minus one piece for a garnish), and then allow to simmer for 15-20 minutes (taste it from time to time to check that the flavor has come through). When you’ve reached the desired flavor, strain out the rosemary sprigs and allow the syrup to cool to room temperature before using. One of our listeners recently wrote in asking about what we were doing to try to be green in our own homes and that really got us thinking. Here’s what she said: Hi! I am really enjoying The Home Hour and my favorite episodes are the ones where you both simply chat and share ideas with each other. My husband and I are in the process of trying to reduce waste, live less “consumable” lives, and improve our eco-friendly habits (such as moving toward no paper towels, no ziplocs, etc.). I would love to hear if you two have thought about this and whether you do anything in your homes to try to live more “green.” Thanks! Today is the moderate’s guide to going green. For almost a decade Graham has been using the same special menu-planning system to get dinner on the table. On this episode of The Home Hour we take a deep dive into Graham’s tried and true method for how she feeds her family. In her incredible career Calder has planned events ranging from the 2001 Presidential Inaugural Luncheon, to the Bloomberg News/White House Correspondents’ Dinner After Party, to some of the most elegant and photographed weddings across the country. However today she’s catching up with The Home Hour about how she entertains at home as a wife and a mother. We learn that at her home, it’s always casual and it’s more about eating pizza on your lap and less about being fussy! However, Calder does share with us a few tips to elevate our everyday events such as linen napkins.  She also says that the juxtaposition of casual and fancy always makes for a great atmosphere so don’t be afraid to serve fast food burgers on fine china and champagne in Dixie Cups! When it comes to parties at home, Calder says it’s less about the fancy, detailed schematics and more about the life-lessons:  be ready for your guests, have enough food, make sure you have great lighting, and keep a comfortable temperature in your home! She also says that a party at home is never the time to try a new recipe. Always go with your favorite tried and true recipes and remember that they will be new and exciting to someone! Calder says the newest trends to look for are “80’s peach” and dark racing green with lacquered brass accents. She also says “Farm to Fork” healthier eating is really hot as is anything paired down to a mini-version of the original, as popularized by Peter Callahan.

Also, this little jar last as about 6 months) While we loved hearing about the latest trends in healthy eating, Liz does caution us that all these fashionable foods, while cool and good for extra healing, aren’t as important as a diet full of greens, good fiber, healthy proteins and healthy fats! Liz also loves fresh fruits but warns that as soon as they are picked, they begin to loose their health benefits. She says frozen fruits are a great option! Liz says popsicles are the perfect way to hide veggies and, because they can be pre-made, they may even be easier to grab in the morning than making a smoothie! All you need is a blender and a popsicle mold. Rather than pureeing and straining (as many popsicle recipes suggest) all the recipes in Glow Pops are simply blended and poured into molds, which keeps all the healthy fibers. Liz also recommends an avocado a day. She says they are the perfect “brain food” and as a bonus, they help give popsicles creamy texture.

She tells clients to look at their location (Location, Location, Location!) and think about whether or not they love it, whether or not they have room to expand, and whether or not they have the margin in their life to handle a remodel! However, if there is something REALLY great on the other side, then moving may be the right choice. Mary Stuart says your first call should be to your agent….not your handman. A good agent will give you the full list things to do and save your handyman the extra trips. She says that while it may be frustrating to spend the money on a home you’re planning to sell, it really is money well spent. The first impression is important to buyers. Additionally, because the internet has made it possible for buyers to tour your home in pictures before ever stepping foot inside, that has only become more true! The goal is to get them to look online and be excited to see it in person.  Graham and Kirsten both love the idea of a house that is a project, but the truth is, we are the exception! Mary Stuart tells us that most people want a house that is done and move-in ready! Mary Stuart shares some great tips for selling a house:

Event Design & Paperie about all things party planning. Here are some beautiful party pics to get you in the mood for hosting! (And so many more on her facebook page)! Since all three of us are moms, we first had to ask Traci about Children’s Birthday Parties! Have things become too over the top when it comes to kid’s parties? (Spoiler Alert: Traci says we asked the wrong person and she never thinks anything is “too much”)  But in all seriousness, Traci tells us that if we do go to one of those outlandish parties, just enjoy it and be grateful for the experience! Don’t feel pressure to compete with that party. Just do what you feel comfortable doing! Traci tells us a great story about what happened when the local train-park party venue accidentally double-booked her date and she had to make her own train parade at home for her daughter. DIY Trains ready to be decorated: Neighborhood Train Parade!  Traci’s 4 steps to throwing a great party: Step 1: Pick a theme.  This is the jumping off point and will help you lay the groundwork everything that follows. Step 2: Invitations. Traci is a fan of paper invitations because it sets the tone for a party and is almost like providing a little gift for your guests right from the beginning. She says that paper invites don’t need to cost a fortune and recommends Etsy, Minted, & Tiny Prints as some great resources for invitations. Step 3: Decor! Traci admits that this is where the time is spent because every party is different and each space is different. You don’t have to go crazy, but put in a little extra effort to make the space look special.   STREAMERS= Always a good idea! Step 4: Plan food, fun drinks, and activities A Little Ice Cream Social We talk about how Kirsten first discovered Traci’s business when she realized that the annual ice cream social fundraiser at her daughter’s preschool had suddenly become one of the best parties in town! Of course it turned out that Traci had been in charge of the event and had been using her expertise to make it incredible! DIY Carnival Games from the last few Ice Cream Socials We also discuss grown-up parties! Traci gives us some great advice to just let the stress go! Don’t let Pinterest intimidate you into not hosting. Traci shares great tips about hosting adults with kids such as hiring a sitter and setting up a kids “bring a ...

Should you hire an Interior Designer? The Home Hour Episode 69
Design your home yourself? Or hire a pro? And what’s the difference between a designer, a decorator, and a stylist anyway? On this episode, Kirsten and Graham chat with Interior Designer Terra Mimikakis about all what it’s like to work with a professional. We talk about trends in design and how Graham & Kirsten both have what they would call “traditional taste” but worry they may sometimes look outdated!  We discuss how things like wall coverings, crazy paints, or unique pillows are easy to change out after a few years and can freshen up a room, keeping it from looking stale. However, more expensive pieces like furniture should be timeless. We talk about what happens when a designer and a client don’t agree on what looks good! Terra explains how examining things on paper and in drawings to really see the ideas visually before committing  with real dollars can usually prevent mistakes and disagreements. But sometimes, in the end, it comes down to finding the designer who you mesh with style-wise before the project even begins! We also learn that Terra lives in a very cool part of town, very close to the airport. (Yes, we hear about five planes land and take off in our interview!) If you want to see some beautiful interiors that will make your mouth water, be sure to visit Terra’s website  Terra Mimikakis Designs! We also discuss Graham and Kirsten’s exciting weekend trips (sans kiddos!) Graham and her husband went to Austin, Texas with friends for a 40th Birthday. They did their part to “Keep Austin Weird” by visiting the “Cathedral of Junk!” Meanwhile, Kirsten tagged along with her husband on a business trip to Florida. While he was working, Kirsten stayed busy scoping out great places for Graham & Kirsten’s future “Golden Girls” style retirement! Palm Trees + Pink Walls = Kirsten’s favorite!

The More the Merrier? Or Too Much of a Good Thing? On this episode, Graham & Kirsten take entertaining to the next level as we discuss whether throwing a big blow-out party is really that much more work than hosting a small gathering? Kirsten just threw a backyard crawfish boil for 400 guests and we devote this episode to looking at what went right, what went wrong and whether or not she would to it again! Links we mention: Powder Cheese (to make mac & cheese for a crowd!) Louisiana Crawfish Company Catering from a grocery store deli  On Episode 68, we get down to the details about hosting large parties and Graham gets the scoop from Kirsten on how her party got so huge in the first place? Crawfish Delivery!  We discuss why Kirsten chose to throw a crawfish boil, who was there to help her, how she entertained and fed the kids, and what was the surprisingly messiest part of the cleanup. We talk about how we both think differently than our spouses when it comes to what think makes a party great. Graham and Kirsten also share some of their favorite hacks for feeding a crowd.   Kirsten’s not the only one entertaining this week (or killing crustaceans for that matter!) We also get to hear about the Graham’s latest event  “Ladies who lunch” turned “Ladies who Lobstah!”

Feng Shui…Beyond the Rooster: The Home Hour Episode 67
Totally Crazy or Totally Genius? What is Feng Shui anyway? On this episode we dive deep into the simple truth at the heart of Feng Shui: Environment affects us! On Episode 67 co-hosts Kirsten and Graham talk to Feng Shui consultant Katie Rogers about this ancient practice. Here are a few links we discussed during the show — and keep reading for interview highlights, DIY success, and more! Links we mentioned in Episode 67 * Katies’ website is fantastic and it contains a wonderful list of reading materials.  Be sure to check her blog for some great articles. * Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter HC-172 is a go-to warm gray paint color(Katie likes it at 50%) * The Western Guide to Feng Shui: Room by Room, by Terah Kathryn Collins * My Overlays (Kirsten’s DIY obsession) Interview with Katie Rogers We learn how Katie accidentally discovered Feng Shui when she began her first job out of college and couldn’t stand working in a sea of gray cubicles and florescent lighting. She had the idea that perhaps she could go into companies and change the spaces to increase worker happiness and productivity. As Katie began researching interior design, she came across a book by Terah Kathryn Collins and her love for Feng Shui was born! She started experimenting in her own home and in her friends’ homes and began to see results. As Katie sees it, the bottom line is that your home reflects your life. The space that you spend time in is actually having a really profound effect on you. There are general principles to Feng Shui, but it’s also really specific to the individual client.  The process begins with trying to figure out what the client needs in their life. More peace? More order? More creativity? Kirsten asks for advice with creating more peace and less chaos when the kids come home from school and Katie says we not only need to make sure there is a space for kids to put their stuff, but moms also have to make it really easy for our kids to put their things away (i.e. not on the other side of the house). There needs to be a natural flow, which is a core principle of Feng Shui. Katie always looks at floor plans, whether the client is remodeling or not, to make sure there is good flow. Kitchens represent health and prosperity. Decluttering a kitchen is crucial! Having a cluttered kitchen could be preventing you from cooking healthy. Bedrooms are also very important in Feng Shui. You should have nothing underneath the bed! Your subconscious is never asleep so by having things under your bed, you are distracting yourself and preventing rest. Katie talks about having visited houses of clients who were actual hoarders and how bad that amount of clutter is to a space.  We learn that we need to be intentional about the things we have in our home. It doesn’t matter if something was expensive or given to you for a wedding gift, if you don’t like it,

Take Better Photos Today, with Karen Walrond: The Home Hour, Episode 64
I’ve always wanted to learn to take better photos, but for years I’ve been stumped by settings and terms I didn’t understand. ISO, shutter speed…it was just easier to stay in automatic mode and hope for the best (and usually, the results weren’t even close to “the best.”) I’ve read tons of photography tutorials, but they just left me more confused. If you’re a similarly confused beginning photographer or even if you’ve got some experience but want to build on your skills, you’re going to love this episode featuring Karen Walrond of Chookooloonks.  Karen breaks down those confusing terms and ideas into fun concepts that are easy to remember, and gives great advice on what to focus on first if you’re overwhelmed. We also talk about the importance of preserving family memories with actual hard copies of all those photos we take and more. Listen now or scroll down for links to resources we discussed on the show (including a discount on Karen’s ebook, Beginning Focus.) Links and Resources: * Use the code HAPPYHOME through 12/31/15 for a 30% discount on Karen’s book Beginning Focus: On finding a camera, the basics of photography, and taking great shots.  * If you’re committed to actually printing out more of those digital pictures of your kids instead of just posting them to Instagram or burying them in your phone’s photo album, you might want to consider investing in a home photo printer. We recently got the Polaroid Zip printer and love it – it makes it super easy to wirelessly and instantly print pics from your phone.
