2093 - Mexico in the Era of AMLO w/ Laura Carlsen
Joining Michael Brooks on today's Majority Report is Laura Carlsen, a political analyst and director of the Americas Program at the Center for International Policy, to discuss Mexico under the presidency of Andrés Manuel López Obrador. While the mainstream media is happy to cover the humanitarian crisis at the US southern border, Carlsen provides a look into how Trump/Miller policy plays out south of the border. Carlsen has been reporting from Tijuana, hearing stories from those seeking asylum who have been held in icebox, chain-linked holding pens while their claims are processed. Carlsen and Brooks discuss the on-going violence in the Northern Triangle, the home of most refugees at the southern border, and how US policies, both foreign and domestic have led up to this point where Central Americans have been left no choice but to leave their homes. Beyond the border crisis, how has Amlo, a left populist elected official, placated and resisted Trump's policies that implicate Mexico? Carlsen points to the situation in Venezuela and Amlo's decision to back a mediation process to illustrate how the president has resisted the Trump administration's foreign intervention practices. Brooks and Carlsen conclude their discussion discussing the on-going drug war in Mexico and the US government's role in growing violence across Mexico. 2091 - War Drums for Iran & the Cost of a Non-Democratic Senate
Sam analyzes yesterday's Supreme Court verdicts including the 5-4 decision to overrule Nevada v. Hall, a 1979 ruling that allowed an individual to sue a state in another state's courts. Sam explains why the conservative opinion will be used as precedent to "make it more difficult for lawyers to refrain from challenging settled law" as stated by Breyer in his dissent. Sam then goes deep on Trump's lasting legacy and his domination of the courts where he recently appointed his 38th appointment to the circuit courts, making 1 in every 6 circuit judges a Trump appointee. What can the Democratic Party do to thwart the GOP's judicial domination? Maybe run strong candidates in competitive Senate races instead of adding to the endless stream of 2020 Presidential candidates--i.e. Beto, Bullock, and Hickenlooper. Meanwhile, Trump's foreign policy team is gearing up for war in the Middle East as Pompeo visit allies and adversaries alike to share Bolton's plans to deploy 120,000 troops to the region. Sam then closes out the free half of the show with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's visit to the White House. And in the Fun Half: why Bernie's support amongst young people is dropping, Ronald Raygun has reached his goal for his migrant bail fund and it's now a 501c and donations are now tax deductible, Pharma executives cut a rap video to market the company's strongest Fentanyl prescription, Sargon of Akkad says it's ok to joke about rape because British soldiers used their dark sense of humor to make it through war, Sam wonders where Ben Shapiro got the authority to decide who is and who is not a Real Jew, Georgia Senator David Perdue lies about pro-choice abortion laws, Candace Owens is now tenured at PragerU, the disturbing trend of alt-right teens on YouTube, the Democratic Party and its strategies to win the Senate, what is libertarian socialism, plus your calls and IMs! 2090 - Civilizing Torture: An American Tradition w/ Fitzhugh Brundage
W. Fitzhugh Brundage, William B. Umstead Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, joins us to discuss his new book Civilizing Torture: An American Tradition. On today's show: Biden doesn't want Medicare-for-all because it would let employers "off the hook" for healthcare. W. Fitzhugh Brundage, William B. Umstead Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, joins us to discuss his new book Civilizing Torture: An American Tradition. America's early colonial settlers claimed to be creating a society free from the tyranny of the Old World, including the torture carried out by the Spanish Inquisition. But it quickly became apparent that wasn't going to happen. From colonial times to the Civil War to the rise of modern policing to the War on Terror, Brundage parses the state's numerous justifications for a practice that haunts our efforts at democracy to this day. On the fun half: Booker compares Warren to Trump because she's campaigning on anti-trust. Poll: Dem voters considering numerous candidates. Will voters abandon Biden once he gets into specifics? 2089 - The Socialist Manifesto & Supporting Bernie 'In Principle' w/ Bhaskar Sunkara & David Feldman
Happy Friday! Today on the Majority Report Michael Brooks is joined by Bhaskar Sunkara, editor of the Jacobin and author of the new book The Socialist Manifesto, and comedian David Feldman, host of The David Feldman Show, to recap the week's biggest stories. Bhaskar Sunkara calls in from his book tour to discuss his road to becoming one of the country's leading socialist thinkers and why he believes Americans are waking up to democratic socialist thinking in 2019. Brooks and Sunkara explain Marx and Engels efforts to expand the democratic franchise through unionization and organized workers parties which helped paved the way for what we now understand as democratic socialism. For all its successes, however, Sunkara concedes that socialist governing systems have suffered bureaucratic mismanagement, racism, and civil unrest; understanding the missteps of social democratic governing can help informs progressive Americans before capital mounts its inevitable arguments and fight against it. Moving to 2020, Brooks and Sunkara consider how Sanders can channel the anger of voters in a productive way that Trump cannot, but also wonder if Sanders' economic populism could engage more voters than Biden's voting-out-of-fear campaign. David Feldman then joins the program to discuss his "principles" and why in 2020 it's all about defeating Trump. While providing healthcare, food security, and government oversight are important things, the most important thing "in principle" is that we unit behind the candidate most likely to defeat Trump. Feldman says the threats of a inter-party circular firing squad and democrats staying home on election day are real and must be avoided at all cost. Additionally, Bernie is not reaching out to the middle class white males like Biden and cannot match Middle Class Joe because the former VP is just that, a middle class white male. While half the country doesn't have $500 for an emergency, Feldman understands, as a middle class man, who has experienced tragedy, that we start reaching out to the middle class and and then reach out to others from there. Feldman ends his interview explaining why it's important to take the advice of Rob Reiner in every aspect of your life. And in the Fun Half: Ben Shapiro gets triggered by UK conservative Andrew Neil, Lula's first interview from prison, TP USA has to remove another white nationalist from its leadership ranks, and a trip to the Bernie archives from his first House election, plus your calls and IMs! 2080 - Biden Stumbles Out, Warren Puts More Points on the Board, & the Executive Stonewalling Begins
We are back live! The MR Team presents you with the news. The MR team is back in action after its annual spring hiatus with a steaming bowl of news. Sam breaks down the Joe Biden 2020 campaign rollout which quickly turned into a stumble after his non-apology apology to Anita Hill, using Heather Heyer's death as the central point of his announcement video, and a surrogate's cynical attempt to diminish Elizabeth Warren's track record as a tough financial regulator.  Meanwhile, Elizabeth Warren's debt cancellation policy proposal looks like it would have a positive impact on the economy if implemented. And Sam closes out the fun half explaining the Mueller Report, its findings, and the problem with only seeing the Mueller Report through the lens of a media critique. And in the Fun Half: Trump's opposition towards oversight, Dave Rubin is getting his comeuppance online and we're definitely here for it but Dave just wants to get back to ideas, Trump is back on the stump and he's spinning lies faster than ever, She the People and Bernie Sanders, the alleged hackings in Florida elections and how to respond to its politics, Obama's role in the 2020 election, Buttigieg's response to why he fired a popular black police chief in South Bend leaves a lot unanswered, plus your calls and IMs! 2077 - At the Boundaries of Homeownership: Credit, Discrimination, & the American State w/ Chloe Thurston
Sam is joined by author Chloe Thurston to discuss her new book, 'At the Boundaries of Homeownership: Credit, Discrimination, & the American State.' While often touted as a sign of individualistic bootstrapping, middle class home ownership in the US is the result of a targeted set of government interventions going back to the 1930s. In this book, Thurston traces the history of government policy around home ownership, with special attention to who was excluded from accessing these kinds of resources (namely: women and African-Americans) and how these groups fought back against discrimination. 2075 - Dust Bowls Of Empire w/ Hannah Holleman
Hannah Holleman, assistant professor of sociology at Amherst College, joins Sam to discuss her piece in Monthly Review, 'No Empires, No Dust Bowls: Ecological Disasters and the Lessons of History.' In this piece, Holleman examines the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, an ecological crisis that drove tens of thousands of farmers from their land. In tracking how capitalist accumulation, settler-colonialism, and white supremacy contributed to the ruinous erosion of soil, Holleman spotlights the social character of these crises, building her case that in order to confront the problems wrought by climate change, we must confront the imperial system of capital itself. 2074 - Planet Fox: How Rupert Murdoch's Empire Of Influence Remade The World w/ Jonathan Mahler
Jonathan Mahler (@jonathanmahler), staff writer for The New York Times Magazine, joins us to discuss his article, 'Planet Fox: How Rupert Murdoh's Empire of Influence Remade the World.' 88-year-old Rupert Murdoch currently sits atop the world's most powerful media empire. Mahler and co-writer Jim Rutenberg examine how Murdoch took a modest inherited newspaper business and turned in into a diversified conglomerate capable of influencing elections and policy around the world. From the rise of Margaret Thatcher to the push for war in Iraq to the current wave of right-wing populism (Trump, Brexit, et al.), Murdoch has proven a savvy foe of progressivism as he both shapes and capitalizes on prevailing trends in conservative politics. 2073 - Barr's Kabuki Theater & Democratic Party Drama w/ Sean McElwee
Good morning, today the MR crew breaks down the live news from Barr's Mueller Report press conference and the fight for the Democratic nomination's latest war of words between Bernie Sanders and the Center for American Progress. While the Mueller Report has ostensibly been released by the Department of Justice. However, to any shrewd political observer, Barr's press conference was a textbook demonstration of how a ruling party disseminates news. It's not a coincidence that Bill Barr gave a speech looking to exonerate Trump of any wrongdoing the day before the Easter and Passover holidays. Taking a quick break from the Mueller Report, Sean McElwee from Data for Progress joins Sam to discuss the changing landscape and left-punching developing in the Democratic Party. For McElwee, this fight began with the DCCC decision to blacklist political vendors who work with candidates who primary sitting Democrats, even if that Democrats is an anti-choice right leaning official like Dan Lipinski. This decision has metastasized to an effort to squash the Justice Democrats and their desire to push the party left. It seems the Democratic leadership has forgotten the messages that won them the house in 2018: that they will concentrate on investigating Trump and advocate for voter rights policies like HR 1. Democratic leadership has capitulated to the bad faith Republicans demands to condemn and ostracize new Democratic members of Congress like Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib. McElwee believes the reactions to the 2018 midterms comes down to a generational divide in the new Democratic majority. Pelosi, Hoyer, and Cummings wish things could go back to the "Beltway as Usual" while AOC, Omar, and Jayapal are trying to push a more aggressive party with bold reform like the Green New Deal and Medicare for All. McElwee and Sam wrap their discussion with an insider's look into how the DCCC and Democratic leadership is presented and consumes polling in DC.
