2017 NFL Preview w/Gary Myers, NY Daily News and author of "My First Coach"
Excitement and intrigue are the themes as the NFL kicks off a new season. Gary Myers is an award winning NFL Writer for the NY Daily News and bestselling author. In this episode, they discuss the impact of a lighter training camp on the quality of play in Week 1. That leads to a discussion about NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to Colin Kaepernick and much more. His newest book, explores the many interesting facets to NFL quarterbacks and their relationships with their fathers. Tom Brady's father is an estate planner. Jim Harbaugh's father had a long career as a college coach. Archie Manning played fourteen years in the NFL and never made the playoffs, but his sons Peyton and Eli won a combined four Super Bowls. Joe Montana is considered by many to be the greatest quarterback of all time, but his two sons bounced around college football with limited success. Jameis Winston's father supported his family working overnight highway construction in Alabama. Derek Carr's father moved the family to Houston after Derek's older brother, David, was drafted by the Texans. MY FIRST COACH goes behind the scenes to explore the unique relationship between these and other quarterbacks and their fathers, as well as investigate various approaches to parenting through their stories. Can young athletes overcome helicopter parents? How did the kids with NFL aspirations deal with their fathers who'd already made it? What kind of pressure did they have to overcome? What kind of pressure did the father who succeeded put on his son to be an athlete? Would the expectations be lower and the results greater if the father was an attorney or doctor? Was it better for the fathers to be overbearing, or borderline disinterested? MY FIRST COACH tells the compelling, real-life stories of some of the country's most famous quarterbacks and how they took advantage of or overcame their relationships with their fathers.

STENGEL Author Marty Appel
Longtime friend of the podcast Marty Appel joins the show to discuss his latest book. The New York Yankees historian and former publicity director who is also the author of the acclaimed Pinstripe Empire and New York Times-bestselling Munson: The Life and Death of a Yankee Captain, returns this spring with CASEY STENGEL: Baseballs Greatest Character, an intimate portrait and definitive account of the single player who best embodied Americas national pastime. There was nobody like Casey before him. And certainly no one like him since. For more than fifty years, Casey Stengel lived baseball. First as a player, where he was the only person in history to play for all the New York teams, including the Dodgers, Giants, Yankees, and Mets and then as a manager, for the Yankees and Mets, among others. He made his biggest mark on the game revolutionizing the role of manager, all while winning an astounding ten pennants and seven World Series Championships including five consecutive titles with the Yankees. Playing with and against a Who's Who of Cooperstowns finest including Babe Ruth, Christy Mathewson, Ty Cobb and forming indelible, and sometimes complicated, relationships with Yogi Berra, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Billy Martin, Casey Stengel was, for an astonishing five decades, the undisputed, hilarious, and beloved face of baseball. Yet for a man who spent so much of his life in the limelight, he still remains an enigma. In CASEY STENGEL, New York Times-bestselling author Marty Appel paints an intimate portrait of a private man who was larger than life and remains the embodiment of the national pastime. Featuring fresh reporting drawn from a trove of a never-before-published research documents and source material, including a previously unpublished memoir by Caseys wife Edna, Stengels definitive biography is a must-read for every baseball fanatics library.

Alex Paen on the NFL's role during the 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis

Ken Griffey Jr is the newest member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. In the closest pursuit yet toward a unanimous choice in National Baseball Hall of Fame balloting, Griffey Jr. missed by only three votes of a perfect score in the 2016 balloting. Of the 440 ballots submitted, Griffey was named on 437, which accounted for 99.32 percent of the vote, the highest plurality in the history of the election that dates to 1936. The previous record holder was Tom Seaver, who was named on 98.84 percent of BBWAA ballots in 1992. For years, Griffey has claimed to have made Seth Everett's career. Hear rare clips from years ago where Griffey staked that claim. (Video here:) Then, it's an exclusive interview with Junior. And more added treats. Congratulations to the man who made my career.
