I have seen so many fluid Japanese learners try to speak Japanese just a little too quickly. This is just one of those things that makes life so much harder. Mostly, because people tend to lose where they are in the conversation or sentence. Heads up. までもない (made mo nai) is an expression used to indicate that the speaker feels that it is not necessary to go as far as doing something, either because it is pointless or inappropriate to do so. It has a meaning that is similar to the English phrase “no need to”, “no need to go as far as” and “don’t bother to”. There is an idiomatic version of tis phrase いうまでもなく (iu mademo naku) that means basically “it goes without saying that…”

Learn Japanese: Yaru やる
[verb] やる (yaru) can be considered another way to say する. The main difference is やる is used exclusively for physical action . Another difference is that する can take the word directly in front of it without the を (like 勉強する), but やる always needs the を. やる can pop up in English as just plain old “do”, but also as “play” or even “send”. One of the other ways やる is used is similar to [ageru] and [kureru] to give. やる is used when someone gives something to someone or allows someone to do something who is below them in social status or rank. Similar to the English “to give” or “to allow”. を通して (wo tooshite) shows that something is done through some means, or happens through some time period. On the surface it is quite similar to によって, but there is a subtle difference. によって has a TON of other meanings in addition to the meaning above. So, if you want to be very clear that what you mark is the means, not the indirect agent or something, then you should use を通して. Learn Japanese: Yatto やっと
Today's awesome grammar point it やっと (yatto) is used to express that what the subject wanted has “finally” been achieved, or that it was just “barely” possible for the subject to do. This can work in a few ways, for instance: It is hard work to get into college, it is also hard work to wait for summer break. When やっと is used, the speaker or subject has a degree of ownership over the action that has been achieved, there is a certain level of work/struggle to recognize a result. In English, it usually shows up as “finally” or “barely”. The phrase used in example sentence 3 is somewhat of an idiomatic usage that means “after all I could do” or “at long last”. It might sound similar to やっと, but it doesn’t carry the positive connotation of the thing being desirable. Quite the opposite, frequently the thing that happens in a とうとう sentence is something undesirable that one has no control over. However, if the thing was something in your control than it expresses a sense of satisfaction over the process, somewhat similarly to やっと. This is a special and unique interview with my friend John Fotheringham from Language Mastery a wildly popular podcaster and writer who has been on everything from Fluent in 3 Months to Business Insider. Language Mastery Website: http://l2mastery.com/ Interview w/ Toru Fukuyama: https://www.spreaker.com/episode/13151423 1. At what point do you think language learners cross the line between using a tool dictionary or mnemonic system as a tool and into a crutch? 2. What is your opinion of Japanese Textbooks like Genki, Yokoso and Japanese from Zero? 3. What role do you think mistake making plays in Japanese language learning? 4. What about Japanese have you found interesting lately. 5. The Japanese tend to focus alot of speed reading as of late, do you think those are skills useful in learning another language? And if so at what point? 6. If you suddenly *poof* forgot all the Japanese you knew and had to start over, but you retained all the knowledge about how to learn a language, how would you re-learn Japanese? 7. In language learning, do you believing in maximizing strengths (like exclusively speaking or reading etc) or making sure you have a solid well-rounded base in learning? If so, please elaborate. Learn Japanese 88: John Sensei Goes Off on how Japanese is taught
This episode is a little bit different. The episode was recorded one time, with no editing and not in the studio. In this episode, John-Sensei goes off on how Japanese is taught at the university and in textbooks. We decided to put it up unedited because we feel like it speaks to the state of how Japanese is being taught. We at Manga Sensei feel the same way. We are sick and tired of how Japanese is being taught and are 100% dedicated to bringing Japanese out of the stone age in regards to teaching. Which was the whole reason we started Manga Sensei in the first place; to fight back against the man and teach Japanese in a way that anyone can learn it. By not only allowing them to make mistakes, but encouraging them to do so. WARNING: John Sensei gets very passionate in this episode.

30 Day Challenge 6: AND... Differences in と & や
Particles:と & や Unlike most particlesと and や can be used between particles to mean ‘and’. と: is a very specific and meaning ONLY: A and B. This is also the most common ‘and’ particle. However, this is an exhaustive list. For example, if you say Aと B it is only A and B, nothing else. や: is an inexhaustive and. Meaning, that you can say Xや Y and there could also be Z but you are omitting it. An example of this would be saying you like Sushiや Chicken Katsu, but you also like Takoyaki but neglect mentioning because the list of your favorite foods would be too long. Example Sentences: たけしくん と さやかちゃんは にほんじん です。 Takeshi-kun and Sayaka-chan are Japanese. いもうと や おとうとは かぞく です。 My little sister and my little brother are family. にほんご と えいごは げんご です。 Japanese and English and Languageages Dialogue: たけし と だいいちは だれ です か? たけし と だいいちは にほんじんです。にほんじん や アメリカじん ひとびと です。 Who are Takeshi and Daiichi?
